Frequently Asked Questions

  Body Cooling

WHO NEEDS A COOLING VEST?
If work, leisure activities or medical conditions make you uncomfortably hot and/or affect your performance, you could benefit from a Cooling  Vest.

WHAT IS HEAT STRESS?
Heat stress occurs when the body's reaction to the environment causes its core temperature to rise above safe limits. This can result in a racing heart, profuse sweating, dizziness, reduced energy and slowed reaction times. This reduces safety, decreases efficiency and lowers productivity.

What is the difference between the many different types of body cooling systems available?

There are many different cooling products available and the best one for you depends on your personal situation, activity and environment. We recommend you consult your health care professional prior to purchasing a cooling garment or system.
A summary of the systems:

Evaporative
Cooling Power: Low*
        Cost: Very Low
(*depending on humidity and outside variables)
Cold packs
Cooling Power: High               Cost: Low to Medium
Phase Change
Cooling Power:  Medium
        Cost:   Medium
Active Cooling
Cooling Power: Very High
 Cost:  High to Very High

Evaporative Cooling: These products come in an assortment of garments that fit a wide variety of locations on the body. They are soaked in water to charge special polymer materials built into the garments. As the water evaporates (sometimes over several days), the garment provides surface cooling. These systems are typically low cost and light weight.

Advantages
Low cost, light weight
works for an extended period of time
Disadvantages
requires wetting of garment
loses effectiveness in higher humidity

Cold pack cooling: These products typically come in vests, neck coolers and wrist coolers. The products work by incorporating cold packs into pockets of the wraps. The cold packs are placed in a freezer or a refrigerator until ready for use and then are placed in pockets designed into the wraps. The packs will stay cold for 2 to 4 hours depending on environmental conditions.

Advantages
medium cost, no wetting required
effective for 2-4 hours, highest cooling capacity
works in all environments
adjustable cooling with more / less packs
extra packs easily carried for extended cooling
Disadvantages
requires access to freezer / refrigerator
requires time for packs to freeze
medium weight: 4-5 lbs.

Take me to Kool Max cold pack Body Cooling Systems - Best Value!

Phase Change Cold Pack Cooling: These products are similar to the cold pack systems only use a phase change polymer in the cold packs or the garment. This technology controls the release of temperature to a specific range through out the cooling cycle. A typical temperature is 58 degree F. Phase change cold packs may be recharged in the freezer, refrigerator or in ice water.

Advantages
charges in ice water, refrigerator, freezer
wetting not required, effective for 2-3 hours
provides moderate cooling temperature
works in all environments
extra packs easily carried for extended cooling
Disadvantages
Higher cost system, high cost of spare packs
Lower cooling efficentcy than cold packs
medium weight: 5-7 lbs.
medium cooling capacity

Active Cooling: These products typically incorporate a coolant, often ice water, that is circulated from a reservoir by a pump system through channels or tubes embedded in a vest. Often a hood for the head is incorporated into the system also. The temperature of the circulating coolant usually can be adjusted. The system operates on batteries, house or car current. This type of system will provide many hours of cooling before the ice and water needs to be recharged.

Advantages
Most effective cooling - core body cooling
adjustable cooling temperature
extended cooling time between recharges
no wetting required, works in all environments
light weight garments
Disadvantages
very high cost system
tethered system limits mobility
requires ice water reservoir

How long does your product stay cold?
Our therapy cold packs are not designed to "stay cold". They are designed to stay soft and absorb heat quickly. Ice therapy requires that as much heat is drawn from the effected area within the first twenty minutes as possible.
Soft-Ice® optimizes therapy by providing approximately 20 minutes of effective cold therapy.

How long will the packs last?
SoftIce® is designed to transfer heat with no chemical reactions taking place. The pack will work as long as there is no physical damage to it.

Frequently Asked Questions

EVAPORATIVE COOLING PRODUCTS

PHASE CHANGE COOLING PRODUCTS

AIR ACTIVATED HEATING PRODUCTS

EVAPORATIVE COOLING PRODUCTS

Q: Is PEF (Polymer Embedded Fabric) safe?
A: Yes. It contains non-toxic polymer crystals.

Q: How does it work?
A: Our PEF is sewn into the lining of all our garments. The PEF absorbs water very quickly and releases it very slowly for extended cooling from evaporation.

Q: How long do I hydrate the garments?
A: 1-3 minutes.

Q: Can the products be reused?
A: Yes. Just make sure you hang them to dry when not in use.

Q: How much will the items weigh?
A: You control the weight of your garment by how long you hydrate it.

Q: Can I silk screen and/or embroider the products?
A: Yes.

Q: How can I wash the garments?

A: In order to maintain the longest life of the product and PEF it is best to wash the garments with a gentle soap and brush. ( not in a machine wash) Hang to dry

PHASE CHANGE COOLING PRODUCTS

Q: What temperature is the Phase Change Material (PCM)?
A: A comfortable 58 degrees F (14 degrees C).

Q: How do you activate PCM?
A: Solidify the inserts by placing them in a fridge, freezer, or ice water.

Q: How long does it take to activate them?
A: Approximately 30 minutes.

Q: How much does PCM weigh?
A: PCM is 25% lighter than water.

Q: Is PCM safe?
A: Yes, it is non-toxic, non-carcinogenic, and non-flammable.

Q: Is PCM reusable?
A: Yes, the inserts can be re-activated over and over again.

Q: How long will the PCM stay activated?
A: Vest inserts will remain at 58 degrees F (14 degrees C) for up to 3 hours.

Q: How can I wash the inserts and clothing?

A: The inserts can be wiped off with a cloth.  They are made of polyurethane and are very durable.  Do not use sharp objects as the inserts could be punctured.  The clothing can be washed as per normal washing instructions for cotton or poly/cotton.  Remove the inserts before washing.

AIR ACTIVATED HEATING PRODUCTS

Q: How do HEAT PAX™ Warmers work?
A: The Warmers are filled with iron powder which oxidizes when exposed to oxygen. This is a powerful exothermic reaction resulting in heat.

Q: How long do the HEAT PAX™ Warmers last?
A: Body Warmers – 16 hours, Mini/Hand Warmers – 8 hours, Adhesive Toe Warmers – 5 hours.

Q: Can the Warmers be reused?
A: You can stop the HEAT PAX at any time and reuse them at a later date by sealing them off from the oxygen in the air (i.e. plastic container or airtight bag). They are discarded when completely consumed.

Q: How do I get the HEAT PAX Warmers to heat up?
A: Simply tear open the package. Wait 10 minutes for them to heat up fully.

Q: Are HEAT PAX Warmers safe?
A: Yes, they are non-toxic.

Q: How do I use them to stay warm?
A: After opening them, place the Warmers in your garment or pocket for maximum comfort.
